SCFT will be at Brighton & Hove Pride 2022!

Date: 23 June 2022

The Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) LGBTQ+ Staff Network has secured a place in the Brighton & Hove Pride Community Parade, taking place on Saturday 6 August 2022.

This will be the first Pride event the Trust has participated in since the pandemic began. After a two-year hiatus, our LGBTQ+ Staff Network are excited to celebrate pride with our community again.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, SCFT participated in the Brighton & Hove Pride parade for three consecutive years. Each year the number of LGBTQ+ staff and allies joining in on the day has grown – from around 30 in our first year, to almost 100 at the last event.

The Brighton & Hove Pride parade provides an opportunity for our staff to celebrate who they are, regardless of whether they are a member of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally.

The day is also an opportunity for our LGBTQ+ Staff Network members to come together in partnership with our other Staff Networks, including our Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME), Disability and Wellbeing, and Religion and Belief Staff Networks.

Through our Staff Networks, colleagues are encouraged to influence the changes that they want to see in their workplace. SCFT is proud to be an equal and inclusive employer that works hard to create an environment in which all staff, and the patients that we care for, feel safe to express who they are.

We provide a wide range of services available to people irrespective of their gender, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, religion, belief, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, or marital or civil partnership status.

In November 2020, we launched an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Executive Steering Group to lead improvements relating to staff and patients, and we are developing a plan to further improve equity of access as part of our ambition to reduce health inequalities.

SCFT’s theme for Brighton & Hove Pride 2022 is ‘love’, which echoes one of our core values of compassionate care. This theme also recognises the strong relationships that staff and patients have developed throughout the pandemic.

LGBTQ+ Staff Network coordinator, Hayleigh Gorringe, commented:

“Despite the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, compassion and care persisted. At SCFT, I think a lasting legacy of this pandemic will be the strength we have drawn from each other, and the new bonds and partnerships that we have forged as a result.”

Returning to tradition, the LGBTQ+ Staff Network asked SCFT Chief Executive, Siobhan Melia, to select this year’s colour theme by picking out a coloured ball from a bag. Watch this video clip of Siobhan picking this year’s colour theme:

Staff across SCFT will join the community parade, representing the Trust with t-shirts, banners and one of our fleet cars decorated in pride colours. The colour theme this year will be red, which aptly represents our theme of ‘love’ this year.

Funding from our official Sussex Community NHS Charity is making our presence at the event possible, and they will also have a stall on the day at Preston Park to help raise awareness of the charity and how people can get involved.
