Churchill Square COVID-19 vaccination centre to close

Date: 27 June 2022

After giving nearly 182,000 doses, the COVID-19 vaccination centre at Churchill Square in Brighton will close its doors on Wednesday 29 June.

The centre, which is run by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, has been operating in Churchill Square since 30 August 2021 following a move from its original location at the Brighton Centre.

A team of 567 staff and 220 volunteers, who have given 26,397 hours of their time for free, have been offering first and second doses, boosters and Spring boosters seven days a week at the centre.

Across Sussex, 75.4% of people have received two doses of the vaccine, and the majority of those eligible for an additional booster in the Spring have come forward to receive their jab.

Demand is now reducing as people become fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and the focus over the summer is on closer work with communities with lower vaccination rates to increase uptake.

The Churchill Square vaccination centre is just one part of the vaccination programme in Sussex. Vaccinations will continue to be available across the city through local clinics, some pharmacies and mobile units, which will continue visiting regular and new sites throughout the summer.

A Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust spokesperson said: “Large-scale vaccination centres like Churchill Square have been an integral part of our vaccination efforts in Sussex. At its peak, the centre was able to give over 1,000 vaccinations every day, and thanks to the team there we have helped to keep thousands of people safe from COVID-19.

“As more and more people become fully vaccinated, the need for such a large vaccination centre in the city has reduced. For those that still need it or are yet to come forward, the COVID-19 vaccination continues to be available at smaller community venues and mobile sites that are easy for people to get to or they may be more familiar with.

“I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has played their part in running the vaccination centre at Churchill Square. It has been a monumental effort that has made a significant difference to the health of our local communities, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of everyone involved.”

It’s not too late to have your vaccination, whether you need your first, second, third or Spring booster.

Churchill Square vaccination centre will remain open from 10.30am to 6pm on Mondays and Wednesdays and 9.30am to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays until its final day of operation on Wednesday 29 June. No appointment is needed for people aged 5 and over, and children aged 5 to 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
