Infant Feeding Team West Sussex

The Infant Feeding Team provides mothers and families in West Sussex with information and support to make informed feeding decisions. The team also provides support to enable women who choose to breastfeed to do so for as long as they wish. This helps to improve health outcomes.

Our purpose

To improve feeding experiences and population health by providing specialist infant feeding and breastfeeding support to families, guidance to health professionals and by developing the HCP infant feeding community. This includes the peer support programme. We are a specialist team within West Sussex Healthy Child Programme, working closely with, acting as a resource for, and providing training for Health Visiting Teams (this includes health visitors, staff nurses and community nursery nurses).

Our support includes:

  • We support the Healthy Child Programme who run MILK! Drop ins in the local areas.
  • Milk! offers infant feeding support for parents/carers, for those who are providing breast milk or mixed feeding. Please feel free to attend these sessions in pregnancy if you would like more information about infant feeding. If you wish to attend with your partner/ family member/friend who is supporting you to feed your baby, they are very welcome. Details of our drop ins can be found on this page.
  • We can provide 1-1 support for complex and persistent breastfeeding challenges, as well as support colleagues and provide education and training to Healthy child programme staff.
  • The Infant Feeding Team run breastfeeding peer support training courses across West Sussex. The course teaches mothers with experience of breastfeeding to support other breastfeeding mothers. They learn about the physical, social and emotional aspects of breastfeeding and then are able to provide encouragement and information to mums attending the MILK! breastfeeding support sessions in West Sussex
