    Who we are

    We are a walk-in centre providing assessment and treatment for minor injuries.

    Our team is led by emergency nurse practitioners and paramedic practitioners and supported by experienced healthcare assistants.

    What we do

    We assess and treat patients with any minor injuries that are urgent but not life-threatening.

    Following assessment, we may need to refer you to A&E, a specialist team, or follow-up with your GP. Your GP will be asked to follow-up on any diagnostic tests we run as part of your assessment, and this is something we will communicate with them.

    X-ray is only available at Uckfield Minor Injury Unit on weekdays. If you attend Crowborough on a weekend and require an X-ray, you will be asked to travel to an alternative site for it.

    Once you're booked in a practitioner will complete your clinical assessment and agree on the next steps with you.

    Preparing for your appointment

    Once you have booked in, you will be seen by a practitioner who will complete a clinical assessment. You could be treated within the unit, given self-care advice, or referred to another healthcare provider.

    What happens after my treatment or therapy plan ends?

    The majority of patients will be assessed, treated, and discharged during their visit. Treatment summaries and any follow-up advice or treatment are shared with the patient's GP.

    If you require an X-ray but attend outside the X-ray department's opening hours, you may be asked to return when the department is open.

    If you attend with an injury which the team is unable to treat, you will be referred or directed to the most appropriate provider.

    Appointment types

    We provide face to face appointments.

    What we can and can't treat

    We can see patients with the following problems:

    • Acute limb injuries including fractures, wounds, sprains and strains (excluding potential hip or thigh fractures)
    • Minor head injuries including wounds to head and face (excluding children under 1year and those with associated neck injury, loss of consciousness or any vomiting)
    • Wounds caused by trauma
    • Foreign bodies in eyes, ear or nose
    • Rib injuries
    • Minor back injuries (excluding chronic conditions or major trauma)
    • Insect and animal bites and stings
    • Burns and scalds
    • Removal of splinters
    • Suturing (stitch up) wounds (excluding eyes, nose and lips)

    We are unable to see patients with the following problems:

    • Chest pain
    • Long-term joint or back pain (the majority of injuries over 2 weeks old are not appropriate for MIU)
    • Sore throats, earaches, chest infections and urinary tract infections
    • Rashes
    • Sexual health problems
    • Abdominal pain
    • Post-operative problems
    • Re-dressings including leg ulcer dressings
    • Abscesses

    Please note the MIU is nurse practitioner led. There is no doctor on site.

    If we’re unable to provide treatment we’ll refer you to the most appropriate service.

    How can I access this service?

    We are predominantly a walk-in service, where patients can self-refer. However, we also accept patient referrals via the ambulance service and GPs.

    Opening hours

    We are open Monday to Sunday, from 8:00am to 8:00pm (please note the last booking is 7:45pm).

    We are closed on Christmas Day.

    Our X-ray department is available Monday to Friday, from 9:00am to 4:15pm.

    Waiting times

    Our waiting times change depending on the clinical needs of the department. Patients with the most urgent clinical needs will be prioritised to ensure they are seen first.
