Conway Court Toy Library

On March 17th 2018 it will be the 25th Anniversary of the Conway Court Toy Library Hove!!

The Toy Library is based in the Conway Court Children’s Centre and has been a huge asset for young families in the local community. Ten to fifteen families use the library per week.  Anybody can become a member and it enables them to borrow a wide range of toys which are suitable for children from the age of six weeks to five years old, free of charge.

For the last 25 years the Toy Library has been run by two of our Volunteers, Deirdre Gumbrell and Sheila Hughes since it was set up in 1993 with a previous Volunteer Manager, and one of the Health visitors. Throughout the years other volunteers have been involved and currently we work in partnership with one of the volunteers from the Conway Court Children’s Centre.

Deirdre Gumbrell first started volunteering  51 years ago with the Red Cross. Deirdre was a long standing volunteer in Hove at the West Way baby clinic which included assisting in the crèche, weighing babies and clerking duties. From there Deirdre joined the Toy Library in 1993.

Sheila Hughes started volunteering 35 years ago at Sussex Eye Hospital and since then has volunteered in various roles including :  a crèche at Moulsecoomb, reception duties at Brighton General Hospital and running a refreshment bar on Home Ward also located at Brighton General Hospital. From there Sheila spent many happy years volunteering at Chailey Heritage, in a variety of roles including medical rehab and at the nursery, before starting at the Toy Library with Deirdre.

Both Sheila and Deirdre have made a huge contribution to the local community over the years and they received The Chair’s Award at the Sussex Community Foundation NHS Trust staff awards last December in recognition of the many years they have volunteered and the difference they have made to the many families supported by the Conway Court Toy Library.
