What is specialist nursing?

The Specialist Nursing Team, based at Seaside View Child Development Centre, is made up of specialist nurses, special school nurses, and specialist early years practitioners. We support children and young people who have complex needs with developmental difficulties, as well as their families.

We work directly with parents to help them understand their child’s difficulties and how best to support their development. We aim to promote resilience and consider the impact of the child’s needs on the whole family.

What does the specialist nursing team do?

We are a flexible and responsive service committed to working in partnership with parent carers and children. We also work closely with education, social care and voluntary services. We offer a range of services including:

  • emotional support
  • advice – for example continence, sleep and behaviour management courses for parents
  • groups for pre-school children
  • information and signposting to other services
  • contributing to assessment panels
  • education and training for parent carers and other agencies
  • Children's Continuing Health Care Assessments

Information about you and your child

The Specialist Nursing team works as part of Seaside View Child Development Service. The information you give is kept confidential to the service and may be shared between team members and other staff to help plan the best care for your child.

In special circumstances we may need to share information with other professionals, for example, to keep a child safe from harm. We will always aim to discuss this with you in advance of sharing information unless we believe that it may put your child or you at risk of harm.

How to access

If you feel you or your child would benefit from specialist nursing, speak to a professional who works closely with them. This would generally be a paediatrician, health visitor or school nurse.
