Inpatient Unit - Piper Ward, Crawley Hospital

There are 26 beds on Piper Ward. 16 beds provide short term rehabilitation for patients aged over 18, with the aim of preventing unnecessary hospital admissions and supporting timely discharges from the acute hospitals. There are 10 stroke rehabilitation beds which provide short term rehabilitation for Sussex patients aged over 18 following a stroke. On admission to the service, we complete a thorough assessment with each patient and a care plan and therapy goals are negotiated with them. Patient’s medical needs are met by a ward doctor supported by our Advanced Nurse Practitioners Monday to Friday and Sunday with out of hours cover provided by IC24.



How To Access

Referrals are accepted from all health and social care professional, including GPs, community nurses and matrons, social workers, hospital consultants and nurses, paramedics and emergency care practitioners. Community referrals are made via the Clinical Assessment Unit (CAU) pathway.

Patients are referred for rehabilitation following:

  • an acute worsening in their health such as infection
  • an acute hospital admission following illness or surgery
  • a fall
  • an adjustment of complex medication
  • a new stroke

Opening Hours

Visiting Times are 2pm – 4.30pm and 6.30 - 8pm.

Visiting outside of these times can be negotiated with the nurse in charge if appropriate.
