Breastfeeding peer support

Breastfeeding Support

What is peer support?

Peer support is women who have breastfed themselves and have received training to support other mothers to breastfeed.

This input from peers, improves families experience and contributes to increasing breastfeeding. It offers a listening ear, addresses common concerns, offers reassurance and importantly, normalises breastfeeding.

Peer supporters:

  • Help make breastfeeding a normal, enjoyable everyday experience
  • Listen to mums
  • Can help boost a mum’s confidence
  • Provide accurate up to date information
  • Have a good knowledge of common breastfeeding challenges and a good knowledge of correct attachment and positioning
  • Know when to refer a mum on to more specialist help
  • Work alongside health professionals in community groups and on the Postnatal Ward at the Royal Sussex County Hospital

What some of our supporters have said about volunteering:

“Had a very good visit yesterday on level 12……felt I helped make a positive difference…... which was fab.  I love my role as a peer supporter!” (peer supporter)

“It’s a great way to support mums in our local area” (CB peer supporter)

“I love spending time with new mums…there is no other work pressure, just time to be with them” (SA-J peer supporter)
