What does this service provide?

Who we are

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service is run by a multidisciplinary team including Physiotherapists, Nurses, Exercise Physiologists, Occupational Therapists and Rehabilitation Assistants.

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Team work together to provide a high-quality personalised exercise and education programme. Service users with COPD and other chronic lung conditions are offered an encouraging, stimulating, and compassionate environment to further educate and learn supporting exercises to improve their condition. We support our service users to achieve their ambitions and goals whilst receiving excellent care in the heart of the community.

What we do

We run a 6 week course of exercise, and education about lung conditions (and how to manage them).

It is available to patients who have:

  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • asthma
  • interstitial lung disease (ILD)
  • emphysema
  • bronchiectasis
  • and patients with these diagnoses who have had a recent flare up that required hospital treatment

The benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation include an improved exercise tolerance, greater understanding of your condition, improved muscle strength and greater ability to fight infection.

First steps

Each patient will have their referral reviewed by a clinician to see if they are suitable for the service, be sent an acknowledgement letter containing waiting-well information.

Patients will receive a call to see if they are interested in attending pulmonary rehabilitation, where they would like to do it and some other basic questions.

If suitable for pulmonary rehabilitation, the patient will be invited to an first appointment, either by phone or in person.

Appointment types

Some of our appointments are over the phone, but there will be an essential need to attend for a face to face appointment to complete your full assessment prior to starting.

First appointment

During the first appointment, patients will have an assessment, gathering vital information around:

  • your diagnosis
  • any other medical conditions
  • wellbeing and support networks

We will conduct:

  • a walking test to assess movement and balance
  • an observation of blood pressure and oxygen levels

This will enable our clinical team to assess your suitability for the class.

Enrolment and course information

Once enrolled onto the class, patients will be invited to attend a venue local to them, for a 6 week course of exercise and education. The course runs for 1.5 hours, twice a week for 6 weeks. The first hour is spent exercising and in the last half an hour, patients receive a talk from the clinical team around disease management.

Upon completion

When you complete your pulmonary rehabilitation course, you will be advised to continuing exercising at home, using all the information you have gained from the classes.

The clinical team will also discuss any onward referrals to local gyms or classes which may be suitable for you.
