West Sussex Breastfeeding Peer Support Graduation
06 February 2019

MILK! Peer Supporters Graduation Ceremony

Nineteen mothers graduated to become MILK! Breastfeeding peer supporters in January.

Breastfeeding peer supporters help other women in the community to breastfeed their babies and give them the best start in life.

Their newly graduated peer supporters were presented with certificates by Nicky Silk (Volunteer Manager, Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust). The graduations took place at Pound Hill Children & Family Centre in Crawley & The Gattons Children & Family Centre Burgess Hill.

The graduation followed two intensive 10 week courses run by the SCFT West Sussex Infant Feeding Team and was supported by Children’s centres in Crawley & Burgess Hill. The peer support course covers all aspects of breastfeeding management and equips the volunteers with the skills and knowledge to support mothers and families to achieve their breastfeeding goals.

Ellie Elkins, Infant Feeding Lead for SCFT (West Sussex) said:

“This course is really important as these volunteers are supporting women from their own communities who are a similar age and share similar common experiences. Mothers enjoy talking to other mothers about breastfeeding.”

The peer supporters work in Milk! Breast feeding drop-ins across West Sussex where anyone can access information and support for breastfeeding either antenatally or postnatally. The peer supporters will work alongside a trained health professional Infant Feeding advisor at the drop-ins.
