Walk for much-loved Paul in aid of service that helped him

Date: 16 August 2021

A walk is to be held in memory of a much-loved Lancing man to raise money for the NHS service that helped him recover from losing a leg.

Family, friends and colleagues of the late Paul Jenkins will hike 17 miles along the Seven Sisters Coastal Path on 18 September in a bid to generate £2,000 for Sussex Rehabilitation Centre.

The prosthetic service at the centre, located in Elm Grove, Brighton, and run by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT), treated the married father of two after he lost a leg to sepsis, or blood poisoning, in 2019.

Paul, an area manager of The London Tile Company (LTC), which he served for more than 30 years, was keen to return this support but was denied the opportunity by his sudden death last year.

Julian Hase, Managing Director of LTC, was aware of his friend and former employee’s wishes and thought a fitting way to honour his memory would be to organise the sponsored walk.

“I thought it would honour Paul’s inspirational courage and determination, his loyalty and extraordinary commitment to the business, and the truly exemplary help he received from the centre,” he said.

“I hope people will join us, donate, or hold their own fund-raiser to help the service.”

Proceeds from the walk will go to Sussex Community NHS Charity, SCFT’s official charity, which funds Trust projects that help patients and staff but fall outside the scope of core NHS funding.

It supports projects which improve health, support learning, upgrade equipment and facilities, modernise environments, and enable medical research.

Rosie Gratwick, the charity’s Fundraising Manager, said: “I’d like to thank Julian and everyone supporting or taking part in the walk for honouring Paul’s memory by raising money for the centre.

“We will use the money raised by their kindness and generosity to fund activities and equipment for patients so they can take part in activities which they might not otherwise be able to access.”
