Using urgent care and minor injury services this winter

Our Crawley Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) and Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) in Horsham feature in a new NHS app reminding people where to go for emergency health this winter.

NHS Crawley and NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG, developed the new app in partnership with local NHS organisations, including Sussex Community NHS Trust (SCT).

The UTC and MIU offer an alternative to A&E as Sue Aston, clinical nurse manager at the Crawley Urgent Treatment Centre, explains:

“Here at the Urgent Treatment Centre in Crawley we are open 24/7. When patients arrive they are triaged immediately and urgent cases are prioritised. We offer a unique and safe alternative to A&E and our individual consulting rooms offer privacy and dignity in smaller environments.

“Patients are seen more quickly here at the UTC because our patients are not waiting alongside patients ready to be admitted to hospital and we don’t handle the more acute cases seen by our colleagues in A&E.”

The medically-led team, most of whom have a background in A&E departments, have to be ready to deal with anything and anyone who arrives at the unit.

Commonly this includes handling minor to moderate injuries, broken bones, wounds and illnesses to life threatening conditions requiring immediate stabilisation and transfer out of the unit to specialist services.

The Horsham Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and works as a walk-in service for patients with minor injuries.

The nurse-led unit provides assessment and treatment for patients with minor injuries such as cuts, insect bites, sprains and fractures.

Judith Dronfield, clinical lead at the unit, said: “Our specialist team of nurses, who all have a background in A&E nursing, assess, diagnose, investigate and treat a wide range of minor injuries.

“We currently see approximately 200 patients every week, the majority of whom do not need planned follow-up treatment, so avoiding hospital admission.”
