We are pleased to announce that our Trust has been awarded the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award 2024. The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) encourages employers to support the defence sector and inspire others to follow suit. It offers Bronze, Silver and Gold awards to employers who commit to supporting the defence and armed forces community, aligning with the Armed Forces Covenant.

While mainly recognising private sector support, the ERS also includes public sector organisations like emergency services, local authorities, NHS trusts, and executive agencies.

We are proud to have received the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award. This acknowledges our Trust's journey since receiving the veteran accreditation in 2023, and the changes implemented to support our Armed Forces community (staff and patients).  Staff have a pivotal role asking our patients: “If you, or your family member, have ever served in the UK Armed Forces” and recording it on SystmOne. It is also important for us to identify our staff in the Armed Forces community to ensure we support them in the best way possible.

Armed Forces week (24 - 29 June 2024)

Armed Forces Week is an annual event in the UK that honours the contributions and sacrifices of those who have served, and who are currently serving, in the Armed Forces. The week aims to raise public awareness of the military community, celebrate the achievements and dedication of service members, and provide an opportunity for the nation to show support and gratitude to veterans, current personnel, and their families.

We are a veteran aware Trust

In May 2023, our Trust signed the Armed Forces Covenant in which we pledged that we will endeavour to uphold the key principles of the Armed Forces Covenant.

Our Trust is part a group of over 180 NHS providers who have been accredited as exemplars of the best care for veterans, helping to drive improvements in NHS care for people who serve or have served in the UK armed forces and their families.

Resources for veterans

Sussex Healthcare App Library

In Sussex there are an estimated 130,000 military veterans. Our Trust recognises that there are unique health needs relating to military service. If you, a friend, or family member have served in the armed forces, we invite you to explore the apps on the Sussex Healthcare App Library ‘Armed Forces Week' carousel, which aim to support the health and wellbeing of veterans, alongside other NHS services. They may not all be right for you so if you have any questions, please discuss with your health professional, or browse the wider library of assured apps.

Forces Connect app

The Forces Connect has been designed to enable signposting for Armed Forces community of which veterans are a group within.

It can be filtered by area and then area of need such as Sussex, Crisis support, employment education and training, Family support care and benefits, Health and Wellbeing and Housing and homelessness. Once selected it will then give other options and then contacts.

This app is free to download. Search Forces Connect on Google Play (Android) or the App Store (Apple).
