Thousands of teens benefit from drive-through and catch-up immunisation clinics

Date: 02 September 2021

Thousands of teenagers who missed their school injections due to lockdown have benefited from drive-through and catch-up clinics across Sussex this summer.

Teams from Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust’s 0-19 immunisation service have held the clinics in numerous and varied venues across the county, including a scout hut, to deliver around 3,000 injections to young people who missed out on them when schools closed due to the pandemic.

The teams, based in Chichester, Crawley, Brighton, Worthing, Uckfield and Hellingly, have been immunising young people in Year Eight and above to protect them from human papillomavirus (HPV), tetanus, diphtheria, polio and meningitis.

Rosanna Raven, the Trust’s Immunisation Clinical Service Manager, said: “We always carry out holiday catch-up clinics but have significantly increased the number we offer this year due to so many vaccinations being missed because of COVID.

“Generally, there are two to four clinics across the Sussex area daily until the end of August – apart from the last few days as we are getting ready to start going back into schools in September.

“We cover the whole of Sussex, from Ore to Emsworth and up to East Grinstead, and can offer a vaccination to anyone in eligible cohorts who is at one of the schools in the area, lives in the area or has a GP in the area.”

One of the holiday clinics was held earlier this month at the 9th Bexhill Scout Group’s Scout Hall in Wainwright Road, where the immunisation team was greeted by Bexhill Town Mayor and Scout Group Chair Councillor Paul Plim.

After hearing the Mayor thank them for “all [you] are doing to make us safe in uncertain times,” the team immunised 270 young people.

Rosanna said the team had since returned to the Scout Hall to hold a second clinic.

Any teenagers who have yet to have their jabs are advised to contact the immunisation team by calling 01273 696011 followed by these extension numbers: 3789 for Brighton and Hove; 8100 for Chichester; 2043 for Crawley; 2080 for Hellingly; 4931 for Uckfield; and 8533 for Worthing.
