Spotlight on projects funded by Sussex Community NHS Charity: 4. Massage chair

Date: 23 December 2021

Time: 09:00

SCFT’s official charity, Sussex Community NHS Charity, raises funds in aid of Trust projects that fall outside the scope of core NHS funding.

It provides grants which improve the health of patients, staff and volunteers; support staff development; improve equipment and facilities for diagnosis and treatment; create patient and family-friendly care environments; and support medical research.

In the fourth of five articles published this week to highlight examples of the charity’s work during the past 12 months, we look at its grant of £4,045 to buy a massage chair for staff based at Brighton General Hospital.

With staff facing higher stress level and increasing pressure on their physical and mental health, funding the chair was an investment in a form of therapy with proven results.

Office Manager Regina French, who requested the grant, said: “Taking as little as 20 minutes out of their ‘work zone’ allows staff to refresh and replenish. They return to a task with a clearer frame of mind, and a fresh new approach.

“Employees who spend a lot of time sitting at a desk, especially those who work at a computer, risk developing Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) or posture-related strains.

“Regular massage can work on alleviating these problems and possibly even prevent them from happening in the first place.”

Staff can now book 20-minute massages in the chair, which is located in a small, quiet room near the lift on the lower ground floor of Dyke Building. Lighting in the room can be dimmed to aid relaxation.

Due to Coronavirus restrictions, the chair is currently only available to staff who work in Dyke Building. Infection prevention and control measures are in place to ensure the chair and room are COVID-safe.

Once Coronavirus restrictions are eased, staff throughout the Trust will be able to book massages between 8.30am and 7.30pm from Monday to Friday, and between 8.30am and 3pm at weekends.

Primary Care Administration, available by emailing sc-tr.primarycareadmin@nhs.net, will be able to provide the booking link.

Staff who have used the chair so far have provided “very positive” feedback.
