RCN sees children’s community nursing in action

Fiona Smith, Professional Lead for Children and Young People, Royal College of Nursing (RCN) visited Sussex Community NHS Trust (SCT) recently to observe children’s community nursing (CCN) in action.

She visited CCN teams in Crawley, Chichester and Lancing, the SCT children's continence team and the Sussex Snowdrop Trust palliative care team.

She also spent time with the head of the CCN service and RCN members.

Her visit was an excellent opportunity to see first-hand the current role and scope of the children's community nurse. She was impressed with a number of initiatives across West Sussex and the positive impact of community nurses on children's lives.

Fiona enjoyed her visit and found it “enlightening”. She said, “The visit has substantiated to me the wider benefits of clinical nurse specialists being community based and providing in-reach work into hospitals rather than nurse specialists being based in hospitals providing outreach into the community.”
