We win prestigious patient, carer and public engagement award

Our research team in partnership with our Chailey Heritage Clinical Services (CHCS) won the Patient, Carer and Public Engagement Award at the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Academic Health Science Network Expo and Awards 2016.

We won the award for work on the Eating and Drinking Ability Classification System for people with Cerebral Palsy (EDACS). The project offers an alternative to the terms often used when rating someone with cerebral palsy’s ability to eat and swallow by introducing five distinct descriptions of different levels of ability. EDACS was developed by consulting with individuals with cerebral palsy, their parents/carers and experts around the world and has been tested to see how easy and reliable it is when used by speech and language therapists and parents.

Research funding for this project was made available from the National Institute for Health Research with the remit to benefit patients and provide better health and care outcomes.

Diane Sellers, our Speech and Language Therapist (Clinical Lead Eating and Drinking Difficulties and Research Fellow), said: “The idea for EDACS arose from the personalised care and support we provide to children and young people with complex physical disabilities. We managed to capture the views and experiences of people with cerebral palsy in partnership with their families in this new health tool which is currently being translated into twenty three languages. I’m so delighted this strong partnership has been recognised by the judges of this award.”
