New Intermediate Care Unit serving Brighton and Hove opens

Date: 18 February 2021 to 31 December 2098

A new inpatient unit offering short term rehabilitation care for up to 15 patients has opened in Hove.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT), the largest provider of community services in the county, has opened Brighton and Hove Intermediate Care Unit in response to significant pressures across the NHS.

The unit will care for up to 15 patients over the age of 18.

Donna Lamb, Chief Nurse at SCFT said: “I want to thank each and every member of staff at Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust who has worked so hard to get this brand new unit up and running.

“It’s a significant milestone for the Trust to be providing these community beds for the first time in Brighton and Hove at a time when the NHS is under such extreme pressure.”

The beds at Brighton and Hove Intermediate Care Unit are for short-term rehabilitation, with the aim of preventing unnecessary admission to acute hospital, and supporting people to leave acute hospitals if they are not yet well enough to return home.

Patients will receive 24/7 care and rehabilitative support from a team of clinical staff and professionals, including nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers and healthcare assistants.

SCFT runs 12 Intermediate Care Units at sites across Sussex and provides community-based medical, nursing and therapeutic care to thousands of adults, children and families every day.

Siobhan Melia, Chief Executive at SCFT, said: “I am so proud that we are able to provide community beds in the city of Brighton and Hove to serve this population.

“The NHS is facing a level of pressure we have never experienced before and being able to open this new unit will help both our local communities and our acute hospitals by providing essential step up/step down care to people.”

Brighton and Hove Intermediate Care Unit is a separate ward on the site of Lindridge Care Home in Laburnum Avenue in Hove. Lindridge Care Home is run and managed by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and is not connected to Brighton and Hove Intermediate Care Unit.
