Dementia Action Week

Date: 17 May 2022

Time: 16:15

Led by the Alzheimer’s Society and scheduled to run until Sunday (22 May), Dementia Action Week is a national event which involves people joining forces to improve the lives of those affected by dementia.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust’s Dementia Leads - Alison Keizer and Fran Hamilton - encourage everyone to support Dementia Action Week 2022.

Here are two ways you can support people living with dementia using SCFT’s services:

This is me

The 'This is me’ support tool was designed by the Alzheimer’s Society to enable person-centred care for patients, including those affected by dementia.

‘This is me’ should be used for everyone using our services who has dementia. It helps to better understand who the person is, which can help us deliver care that is tailored to the person's needs.

Watch the video below which provides more information about the ‘This is me’ tool:

Further information and support are available from the Alzheimer’s Society and the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) Dementia Team.

Twiddle muffs and lap quilts

You can knit a twiddle muff or sew a lap quilt to provide sensory stimulation, meaningful occupation and relaxation for people living with dementia.

The Dementia Team have received some lovely twiddle muffs from the public (pictured below). More twiddle muffs and lap quilts are always in demand as they are given to a patient living with dementia as a gift when they leave our services – such as Intermediate Care Units (ICUs).

Find out more about the benefits of these sensory items and guidance on how to make them.

The Dementia Team look forward to seeing your creations!
