Improving the health of carers with unique service

Carers Week (9-15 June)

More and more carers living in West Sussex are benefiting from our recently launched carers health team which is available to the 84,000 unpaid carers living across West Sussex.

Unpaid carers provide essential care and support for their family and friends and their own health can sometimes be affected as they put the person they care for first.

Our unique carers health team, the only service of its kind in England, is led by a team of clinicians who visit carers in their own home and check their general state of health and wellbeing. The team offer advice and enable carers to maintain or improve their health.

Since the launch of the service last November, the team now support approximately 55 carers every month and feedback has been hugely positive.

Wilma Thomas, team manager for the carers health team at Sussex Community NHS Trust, said: “Since our launch, we’ve supported more than 430 carers across West Sussex, this includes men and women from the age of 18 and we are already seeing the benefits.  Our support has helped them to improve both their quality of life and the person they care for.

“Caring is a hugely important role that many people take on every day. Carers don’t receive training and much of their daily routine is focused on the person they care for, rather than themselves. Many carers report a decline in health since becoming a carer and some might not even have time to visit their GP for a check-up.”

Dr Lynne Kirkwood, GP at West Meads GP surgery in Bognor, said: “This service fills the gap by providing an invaluable support for carers. The carers health team are helpful and constructive in giving both practical and emotional support so that carers address their own health needs.

The patients I have referred to the service have all had a very positive outcome and I look forward to working with the team more in the future.”
