New and expanded Clinical Assessment Unit and new Piper Ward opens at Crawley Hospital

A new Clinical Assessment Unit (CAU) and the new bedded Piper Ward at Crawley Hospital has opened this week as part of NHS Crawley Clinical Commissioning Group’s plan to transform urgent care in Crawley.

The new CAU has a large, bright and welcoming reception and waiting area, six assessment trollies and four treatment chairs, three consultation rooms and a discharge area for patients awaiting transport back home.

The CAU provides rapid assessment and treatment for a number of conditions which do not need admission to an acute hospital including: chest infections; breathing problems, asthma attacks, falls, severe headaches, urinary tract infections and non-passing of urine, stomach pains, diarrhoea, vomiting, deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and cellulitis.

All those attending CAU will have been referred by either their GP or another healthcare professional e.g. Paramedic. Some might have been referred by clinical staff in the Urgent Care Centre (formerly Urgent Treatment Centre) at Crawley Hospital. NOTE: The CAU is NOT a self-refer/walk in service.

Provided by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) the new and extended CAU will treat many more patients in a modern environment closer to home and is expected to relieve demand at the Accident and Emergency Department at East Surrey Hospital.

The unit is staffed by Specialist Doctors, Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Junior Sisters who clinically assess patients. Investigations carried out include blood tests, x-rays, scans and electrocardiogram (ECG) to diagnose and ensure appropriate treatment is provided. People being cared for can spend up to four hours within CAU whilst treatment is being carried out.

CAU is open 8am till 8pm Monday to Saturday. X-ray is provided from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday. The CAU is located on the basement floor of the main building at Crawley Hospital and is clearly signposted.

Piper Ward

A new bedded inpatient unit, named Piper Ward, has opened today at Crawley Hospital. Provided by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) the new ward will provide step up beds from referrals received from the new and expanded Clinical Assessment Unit, which opened at the hospital on Monday, as well as referrals for patients who need extra nursing and rehabilitation care but do not need an admission to East Surrey Hospital. Beds will also be provided for step down referrals received from East Surrey Hospital for patients who need additional rehabilitation and nursing care before they return home, with appropriate care and support in place.

Piper Ward is staffed by a Matron, Doctors, Ward Manager, Nurses, Therapists and Healthcare Assistants.

Dr Amit Bhargava, Clinical Chief Officer, NHS Crawley Clinical Commissioning Group said: “I am very pleased and proud that Crawley CCG and our partners, by working together to improve services for our population, have opened our new and improved Clinical Assessment Unit in Crawley Hospital. This will create much needed capacity in a modern, pleasant and clinical environment.

“Our dementia-friendly, Piper Ward, on the 6th floor of Crawley Hospital, with its great views, has just opened too. Later in the year we will complete improvement works on the Crawley Urgent Care Centre. Crawley CCG’s ambition has always been to bring as many health and care services closer to the people of Crawley as is safely possible, using our hospital, our community infrastructure and community services. The Clinical Assessment Unit and Piper Ward are key components of this ambition.”

Vivek Patil, Acting Deputy Medical Director for Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust and lead clinician in the CAU said: “This is great for Crawley and the local surrounding communities, for the hospital and for our staff. Before, CAU had just two assessment trollies. Now we have six trollies and four treatment chairs in a brand new, modern facility and we’ll be able to provide more urgent ambulatory care in the community instead of people having to attend Accident and Emergency.”

“Piper Ward is a brand new, modern inpatient unit, providing rehabilitation and nursing care, with the aim to get people back home safely with the right support in place. Our vision is to deliver excellent care at the heart of the community.”
