Exciting future for local NHS as plans for community health hub unveiled

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) has unveiled plans to redevelop the Brighton General site and create a purpose-built community health hub.

The Trust, which provides NHS services in homes, clinics and hospitals across Sussex, has set out a range of options for the development of the East Brighton site.

The options for the site could see a space created for a brand-new, sustainable hub to house SCFT’s clinical services in one place, while many buildings, around 50% of which are empty or unused, could be converted into much-needed local housing.

Siobhan Melia, Chief Executive of SCFT, said: “We are really excited about the future, creating a purpose-built community hub in the heart of Brighton will ensure the local NHS continues to thrive. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to improve things for the many thousands of people who rely on our services and the 5,000 staff that make up our Trust.”

Brighton General Hospital was built in the 1860s as a Victorian workhouse, becoming an NHS hospital in 1948. Its wards fell below required standards and in 2009 the last inpatient beds were removed.

Today the Trust has launched a second phase of patient, public and staff engagement to gather views about the proposals and to engage on a shortlist of options before any decisions are made.

Hundreds of people, both inside and outside the organisation, have already completed print or online surveys on the future of the Brighton General site.

Of those who responded:

  • 84% were in favour of redeveloping the site to create a purpose-built community health hub
  • 78% want to see improved transport links
  • 74% would like to see better access for people with disabilities
  • 71% think the layout and signage on the site could be improved

After the next round of patient, public and staff engagement the Trust hopes to take a preferred proposal to health regulator NHS Improvement later this year.
