Family nurse partnership supervisor wins Dr Sue Eckstein leadership award

Suzy Portway, family nurse partnership (FNP) supervisor West Sussex, is the successful winner of the Dr Sue Eckstein leadership award presented at our annual leadership conference.

Suzy leads the team and provides an intensive home visiting service to vulnerable teenage parents, supporting them and to ensure their children get the best possible start in life.

Suzy said “I am honoured to be the first to receive the Sue Eckstein leadership award, and inspired by Sue’s husband, Alistair Burtt’s call to follow her example in wholeheartedly grasping life’s opportunities and always remembering kindness. I would like to acknowledge and thank my team, a group of highly skilled and motivated family nurses and our dedicated administrator, who are deeply committed in delivering the family nurse partnership programme to first time teenage parents in West Sussex.”

Kate Pilcher, head of children’s services said “Suzy really makes a difference to the lives of people she and her team support, improving the lives for both babies and parents. She provides inspirational leadership to her team which is nationally recognised as delivering an excellent, high quality service.”

The Sue Eckstein award has been launched this year following Sue’s death in 2013. It acknowledges her support of Sussex Rehabilitation Centre and Brighton & Hove palliative care partnership. The award recognises and celebrates how leadership commitment and enthusiasm plays a crucial role in enhancing quality of care and patient outcomes.

About Dr Sue Eckstein

Sue Eckstein was an accomplished academic and writer and a great advocate of our work. She died in November 2013, but her experience of NHS care and her work on clinical ethics at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School led her to consider in detail what good care looks like – insights she shared with us at our leadership conference in 2013 and AGM in 2011.
