Psychotherapists from the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) Diabetes Care for You (DCFY) Psychotherapy team attended the Quality in Care (QiC) Diabetes 2019 Awards presentation ceremony on Thursday 17 October. The DCFY team were shortlisted finalists in the Mind and Body Healthy Together – Emotional Wellbeing Programmes for People with Diabetes – Adults category, and we are delighted to announce that they won the award for their work towards “Embedding Psychotherapy Within a Community Diabetes Team”.

Commissioned in 2016, DCFY is SCFT’s outstanding multidisciplinary community diabetes service, integrating diabetes psychotherapy and emotional support with the patient pathway. They provide group education and psychological information for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, work with women with sexual dysfunction and patients with diabulimia and binge eating disorder, and offer psychological assessment for patients requiring insulin pump therapy.

The QiC Diabetes Awards attract entries from a wide spectrum of diabetes-related patient care progammes across the UK and Ireland. The judging panel, made up of recognised academics, clinicians, patient bloggers, nurses and commissioners working in diabetes, praised DCFY’s focus on female sexual dysfunction as “commendably ground-breaking”, and heralded the programme itself as displaying a “truly innovative approach to integrating diabetes services with all aspects of the patient pathway and the multidisciplinary team”.

Now in their ninth year, the QiC Diabetes Awards celebrate innovative practice in diabetes management, education and services. A QiC Award means an initiative has been professionally recognised as improving the quality of life for people living with diabetes, so we are incredibly proud of our DCFY Psychotherapy team for this prestigious and well-deserved win.
