karen profile

I started my career in the NHS in 1987 as ancillary nurse. I trained at the Royal London as a Registered General Nurse (RGN) and Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMHN).

I've worked in busy A&E departments in London and Winchester. I've also worked in the private sector for some time to support people living with head injuries.

My heart has always been with the NHS and I joined Sussex Community as Ward Manager at Arundel & District Community Hospital in 2012. Within three months I was promoted to Matron.

What I love about my job?

I love working with my team of nurses and healthcare professionals, as well as working closely with Lucie and Tori - the three of us are matrons and we manage a number of inpatient wards across Coastal West Sussex area.

I love the fact that I work with patients and colleagues from all walks of life, and although I'm now a Matron, I still influence the delivery of high quality care for our patients. There is a real sense of achievement working with patients and to enable them to retain independence, and to get them back home when they are well.

Celebrating NHS70

Over the years, all my best friends work in the NHS, so we'll definitely be raising a glass to celebrate the NHS turning 70.
