What does this service provide?

Who we are

We are a team of wheelchair therapists including nurses and qualified allied health professionals such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists and rehabilitation engineers, supported by specialist technicians and administrators.

What we do

We provide wheelchair and specialist seating provision for children, young people and adults. The aim of our service is to maximise mobility, independence and quality of life for our service users and carers.

We can provide:

  • transit and self-propelling manual wheelchairs to meet basic mobility needs
  • buggies for children over 30-months or to younger children with specialist seating needs
  • high performance wheelchairs
  • powered wheelchairs for indoor use. These can also be used for secondary outdoor use where this is assessed as safe
  • pressure care for use in the wheelchair
  • custom contoured or specialist seating when an off-the-shelf solution cannot be found

Our service also provides:

  • training and information on how to use and maintain equipment on delivery to you
  • a planned and preventative maintenance programme for all NHS issued powered chairs
  • an accessible repair service, including an urgent response repair service if you are a full-time user of our service and are at risk of harm due to significant equipment failure

Who you'll see at your appointment

To ensure we provide you with the best and most efficient service, you may meet several different members of our staff. Our team work in different formations tailored to your needs.

Preparing for your appointment

At your initial appointment we'll undertake a holistic assessment of the current and future needs of you and your carer. The assessment will take into account your clinical, employment, education, housing, leisure needs and environmental constraints (where appropriate).

What happens after my treatment or therapy plan ends?

When your episode of care with us is complete, you will be discharged from our service, with appropriate onward referral and/or aftercare advice. We may schedule a review period and if further needs arise you are welcome to get in touch with us.


How can I access this service?

Subject to meeting our eligibility criteria, we will supply a wheelchair to anyone who has a long-term mobility need (this is defined as 6 months or over) and has a GP in West Sussex or Brighton and Hove.

We operate an open referral system and accept referrals from GPs and other health care professionals.

All clients who meet our eligibility criteria will be offered provision of a Personal Wheelchair Budget for wheelchairs and buggies (where appropriate).

The pathway for children requiring specialist seating is via Chailey’s Clinical Services posture clinic.

Our assessments are provided in a clinical, educational, home or work setting depending on your specific needs.

Opening hours

We are open Monday to Friday, from 8:30am to 4:30pm. We are closed at weekends and on bank holidays.
