Why I work in the community...

Band 5 Nurse Interview – Kelly
Integrated Primary Care Teams

Kelly joined us in November 2014 after she completed her final 12 weeks placement on a general medicine ward at Worthing Hospital and qualified as a nurse.

She tells us what attracted her to work for us and the on-going support she has received.

I’ve always been interested in community healthcare and used to work for a private provider supporting people to remain independent in their own homes.

“When I saw the job advert I knew I had to apply. I’m passionate and motivated to provide help, care and support to people in their own homes, where they prefer to be, out of hospital.

“The job is more rewarding than working on a ward as I’m able to build long-term relationships with the people I care for, they know who I am and they trust me. We work together as a team to keep them well and avoid deterioration in their health.

“Working in the community is more involved as we look at the full holistic needs of each patient – physical, psychological and we assess their home environment. What’s great is that I work in a multidisciplinary and multi-agency team where all professional come together to best meet the needs of each individual. Professionally, this is really important as I work with a wider pool of practitioners. We share best practice and we continually develop our skills.

“I don’t feel as though I’m on my own when I’m visiting patients as I know my colleagues are at the end of the phone if I need to check anything or need advice. This experience has really boosted my confidence.

“I like working here because of everyone’s passion and enthusiasm. I knew instantly following my interview that I wanted to work here. I’ve been really supported in my role from the start. I’ve received on-going training – the wound and tissue viability training is the best I’ve ever had.

“I work in a really supportive team – everyone is friendly and we help each other. I would recommend other nurses to join the trust whether you live locally in Sussex or further afield – everyone is so passionate.”
