What does this service provide?

Who we are

Our multi-disciplinary team is comprised of a consultant paediatrician, senior physiotherapist and clinic nurse.

Multi-disciplinary team: A multi-disciplinary team (MDT) is a group of health and care staff who are members of different organisations and professions (e.g. GPs, social workers, nurses), that work together to make decisions regarding the treatment of individual patients and service users. MDTs are used in both health and care settings.

What we do

We focus on improving mobility – reducing pain secondary to muscle spasms with the goal of improving your functional abilities.

We assess your functional abilities and if appropriate, observe you walking. We then do a clinical examination, looking at the range of movement in your joints.

During an assessment we will provide you with the opportunity to share any concerns relating to movement, pain, and function. We will also discuss the possibility of you having Botulinum Toxin injections and review the goals you have set with us at previous movement clinics.

Where appropriate, we provide you with a physiotherapy programme and can advise on any queries regarding orthotics and postural management.

We can also discuss with you whether further intervention is necessary and refer you on to the relevant service.

Appointment information

Appointment types

Your appointment will take place in one of our outpatient clinic rooms at Chailey Clinical Services. When you arrive, our receptionist will check we have your correct details and show you where to wait for your appointment. A member of our team will meet you and take you to the clinic room.

Your initial appointment is usually 45 minutes. If injections are necessary, the appointment can be between 30–90 minutes depending on your age. Review appointments take between 15–30 minutes.

At the end of our assessment, we will discuss our findings and advise you on what can be done to help you with your movement system. This can include further referrals for physiotherapy programmes, splints, postural management, and medical and surgical interventions. Our recommendations may also include the use of targeted Botulinum Toxin injections to overcome tightness and spasm in specific muscle groups that are causing you functional problems or pain.

If it is decided that Botulinum Toxin injections would be helpful, we will discuss this with you in detail at your appointment, and you are welcome to ask any questions.

Following your appointment, a report will be sent within 3 weeks documenting the discussion and advice provided. It will be sent to your GP, teacher, and any other relevant healthcare professional.

It may be that we have decided that you should have generalised or targeted medical interventions. If Botulinum Toxin injections are felt to be appropriate, we will put you on the waiting list and ensure that you receive written information about the procedure. The injections do not take a long time to perform and are well tolerated by children and young adults.

The outcome of any interventions will be reviewed carefully at approximately one month and then three months later in the physio movement review clinic. Further recommendations may be made about any changes in your management plans. If further medical interventions are necessary, these will be discussed with you.

Who you'll see at your appointment

During your assessment, you will meet one of two consultants:

  • consultant paediatrician
  • senior physiotherapist

A clinic nurse will also be present.
