Guidance has recently changed and suggests that antibiotics are not likely to reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill. However, while taking antibiotics, should you become unwell with diarrhoea or vomiting, this can cause the pill to become less effective.

Accordingly, you are advised to use additional methods of contraception (e.g. a condom or sheath) whilst taking your course of antibiotics and for seven days after stopping the course. You should continue to take your contraceptive pill in the normal way during this time.

Any concerns or questions you may have regarding this information can be addressed to your dentist in complete confidence.
